Course Description:

'' A one day course covering a wide variety of temporary works design principles and practical examples of good practice. Three years practical construction experience and limited design experience is assumed of delegates.
Course Objectives:
To raise awareness of basic design principles and practical site issues.
To aid designers in producing economic and practical designs.
To raise awareness of designers’ responsibilities to consider temporary works under CDM regulations.

Course Outline:
Use of basic design principles and design charts.
Gathering and interpreting soils information
Design principles for trenches, excavations, underpinning and cofferdams
Piling equipment selection and piling techniques.
Writing design briefs, risk assessments, method statements and producing working drawings
Calculating concrete pressures and basic shutter design
Basic design of soffit support formwork and falsework
Back-propping reinforced concrete flat slabs
Mobile crane outrigger pad design
Principles of tower crane base design
Principles of piling mat design
Temporary works for structural alterations of existing buildings
Principles and examples of façade retention
Testing and quality control
Case studies of accidents failures
