Training Course:

Bel Canto Opera

School/Trainer:

The Juilliard School
New York City, New York, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online/Live | On-site/In-house | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' By the beginning of the 20th century the bel canto operas of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti had virtually disappeared from the repertory, overcome by the more powerful vocal, orchestral, and emotionally immediate styles of late Verdi, Wagner, and the verismo composers. Except for a few operas such as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Lucia di Lammermoor, bel canto as a style and aesthetic was considered hopelessly dated. Since the end of World War II, however, there has been a revival of interest in the operas of these masters, as a generation of singers who are able to cope with their considerable vocal and expressive demands—Callas, Horne, Sutherland, Sills, Ramey, Florez, to name a few—has come into prominence. That drama in music can be achieved through beautiful melody and poised, graceful singing is once again an accepted fact. In this course several works by Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini will be studied, illustrating different genres from the period (c. 1812-1845), including opera seria, opera buffa, opera semiseria, and even operas written for Parisian theatres both in Italian and French. ...''
