Desert Island Operas

School/Trainer:

The Juilliard School
New York City, New York, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online/Live | On-site/In-house | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' What if you could bring along just six operas â€?each by a different composer â€?for the rest of your life on a desert island? In this introductory course, we’ll explore the delights of this great art form from contrasting angles. Each of the masterpieces presented in class will be performed in New York next season, allowing students an opportunity, outside of class, to see the operas they’ve studied. In the fall term we’ll examine two new Met productions: La Damnation de Faust (Berlioz) and La Rondine (Puccini), along with such important Met revivals as Salome (R. Strauss), The Queen of Spades (Tchaikovsky), and an opera frequently called the greatest of all time, Don Giovanni (Mozart). In the spring, a completely new course again features two new Met productions, Il Trovatore (Verdi) and La Sonnnambula (Bellini), plus such eagerly anticipated revivals as L’Elisir d’Amore (Donizetti) and La Cenerentola (Rossini). After a brief look at the historical background for each work, we will turn to the music and drama itself, paying special attention to the composer’s choices: Why does Strauss not allow us to see the prophet Jochanaan, whose baritone thunders from deep below ground, in Salome? Why does Berlioz include an out-of-tune “Amenâ€?chorus for the drinkers in La Damnation de Faust? Why does Rossini save Cinderella’s most celebrated aria until the very end of La Centerentola? Enhanced by recorded audio and visual excerpts, this lively course will encourage novices and aficionados alike to think differently about opera. ...''
