'' The programme is designed primarily for newcomers to the supply, procurement and materials management functions. It is suitable for:
�experienced staff from within the Supply function who would benefit from a wider understanding of the overall roles and responsibilities of the function
�graduate entrants
�people transferring from other functions or divisions of the business
�people serving in other functions, such as Finance and HR Management, who need an understanding of the supply business and its activities without themselves necessarily being involved.

This course addresses principles and practical techniques for effective procurement and management of materials within the organisation.

Understanding the total procurement process and the parties involved
Good business practices in the procurement & supply of requirements
Different purchasing strategies for various types of equipment & materials
Buyer / supplier relationships
Purchasing specifications �technical & commercial considerations
Tendering & evaluation
Managing purchase orders after award
Organisation & staffing for effective procurement & supply
Internal controls during development and award of contracts
Measuring procurement performance
Re-engineering of the procurement process
Finding the good suppliers rather than chasing up the bad ones
Defining terms �suppliers, vendors, manufacturers etc.
Supplier relationships that support effective procurement & supply strategies
Assessing the range of goods and services to be provided by suppliers
Supplier appraisal principles and techniques �inc. the role of ISO9000.
Supplier performance during delivery of orders
Expediting and Quality Control in context of the overall procurement & supply process
Objectives of expediting and quality control, and the basic requirements
The role of ‘preferred supplier�lists
Supplier performance monitoring
Warehouse Operations:
Warehousing requirements in context of the overall procurement & supply process
Safe and secure warehousing operations inc. hazardous materials
Goods receiving, goods inward inspection �inc. documentation & certification
Effective storage and preservation of stored items
Stock taking and stock checking, accuracy of stock records
Issuing of materials
Record-keeping and administration, including interfaces with other departments
Organisation and staffing for warehouse operations
Inventory Control & Materials Catalogues:
Differences between materials ‘catalogues�and materials ‘inventories� Materials identification systems �codes, word search etc.
Standardisation and variety control
Development of a ‘stockholding policy�inc. financial accountability
Organisational roles for selecting stock items, deciding stock levels and controlling stock
Inventory control techniques for different classes of materials, including ‘service level�considerations
Retirement & disposal of equipment & materials:
Retirement of items from service �salvage or dispose?
Ownership and responsibility for disposal of items
Influence upon initial procurement strategies
Authorisation to dispose of items, budget cover and updating asset records
Environmental considerations of disposal �ISO14000 etc.
