'' Learn about core technologies fueling the ongoing digital mass media revolution in television, music, movies, and mobility. Lectures and discussions with industry guests, as well as case studies, focus on current business and production issues and introduce new business models. Topics include advertising’s new TV technology, including new rules and new metrics; digital TV formats for production, broadcast, and consumption; digital production technologies and methods; interactive TV: platforms, middleware, and applications; personal video recorders (PVR)/digital video recorders (DVR), like TiVo, and related set-top-box platforms; IPTV, the new wave of television riding IP technology; video on demand (VOD) and other TV content-access models; Telco versus cable: the battle over the four-way play with TV, Broadband, wireless, and telephone; mobility, telematics, and wireless, including GPRS, 3G, WiMAX, and Ultra-wide band (UWB); and the digital home and consumer electronics: home media centers, networks, and changing consumer behavior. Participants are challenged to assess business models, formulate opinions, and prepare their own strategic plans for careers and new ventures. By the end of the course, students should understand the opportunities available in the media business. Past guest speakers have included executives from such companies as TiVo, DirecTV, IPG Media Lab, Radical Media, Schematic, DiVx, Microsoft Xbox. ...''
