Course Description:
'' This course surveys and analyzes a broad class of commercial and governmental communication systems while developing the practical tools to understand and design these systems. Communication systems considered and compared include fiber optics, computer, mobile cellular telephone, satellite, cable TV, AM and FM radio, VHF, UHF, HDTV, terrestrial microwave, shortwave, fire, police, and local government. Participants explore practical and analytical topics in the design and understanding of commmunication systems, including Fourier series and integrals, time and frequency domain representation of communication signals, convolution, linear systems, transfer functions, sampling theorem, and probability and statistical theory as applied to communication problems. This course also outlines such various modulation/demodulation schemes as AM, FM, vestial modulation, OOK, M-ary FSK, and M-ary PSK; compares and contrasts M-ary FS Analog and digital techniques; and reviews block, convolutional, and other coding approaches, as well as telephone, fax, voice, TV, and computer networking systems. Business trends in the communications field are discussed, and telecommunications concepts are illustrated. ...''
