Course Description:
'' This course emphasizes learning GIS through forestry application using the ArcView�GIS by ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute). You’ll finish the course with an understanding of how GIS store maps digitally, and an awareness of their application in characterizing forests, including mapping forest attributes, calculating timber and non-timber values, assessing harvest activities, identifying forest patches and measuring forest landscapes, defining management units, and finally stratifying forests aspatially as well as spatially. In addition, youll finish the course with well developed GIS problem-solving skills, able to use ArcView to query, manipulate, summarize, and analyze forest inventory data to find answers to complex questions - like these:
whats the size, in hectares, of the largest old growth patch? what volume of operable timber would be displaced by a 50 m riparian buffer around streams and other water bodies? what amount of edge, in kilometres, separates recent clear cuts from old growth? what area of forest stands occur on Reece soils? what portion of stands are adjacent or intersected by main or secondary roads? whats the mean nearest neighbour (MNN) of fully stocked forest patches? ...''
