Training Course:

Landfill Gas Collection and Combustion

School/Trainer:

College of Extended Learning - UNB
Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online/Live | On-site/In-house | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' There are several overall reasons for implementing landfill gas collection and combustion systems at landfills. Regulatory drivers have historically been the primary reason, as related to concerns regarding migration of landfill gas (specifically the methane component) to buildings or other inhabited areas, and odour concerns. In the current day and age, new reasons for implementing such systems have developed, including the utilization of landfill gas for the production of energy (electricity or natural gas) and the generation of emission reductions that in some cases can provide revenues. This seminar will discuss the technical design and construction aspects of landfill gas systems as they relate to the landfill as a biological entity that must be properly managed as a whole in order to satisfy the given objectives. Issues regarding effective operations will also be discussed. Further, an overview will be given that outlines the beneficial results of landfill gas collection, including options for energy production and the potential greenhouse gas savings that can be achieved by municipalities or private entities.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:
Describe the basic components of a landfill gas collection and combustion system
Explain the technical items behind assessing landfill gas availability
Explain the energy production possibilities associated with landfill gas
Evaluate the greenhouse gas emission reductions associated with combustion of landfill gas
List the reasons why the integration of landfill management items with landfill gas collection is important. ...''
