'' This course focuses on the basics of configuring and using the Domain Name Service, sendmail, the Network Information System, and the Network File System, as well as the basics of network security.
This course covers the variations between Linux, Solaris, AIX and HP-UX, but the exercises and examples focus on using a Linux system. Alternate exercises for Solaris-specific procedures are also provided.
Learning Objectives After completing this course, students will be able to:
Explain the structure and function of the Domain Name Service (DNS) Set up a UNIX machine to function as a DNS server Configure and use sendmail Set up an NIS domain, with an NIS master server and NIS clients Describe basic network security issues and solutions Set up a UNIX machine to act as an NFS server Set up a UNIX machine to act as an NFS client Prerequisites Familiarity with basic UNIX system administration functions, including:
Starting and stopping a UNIX system Setting up user and group accounts on individual machines Basic backup and restore commands and procedures Monitoring a UNIX systems activity In addition, students should also know how to:
Configure TCP/IP networking on UNIX systems Administer TCP/IP services on UNIX systems Monitor TCP/IP network activity using UNIX tools Knowledge of shell programming is helpful, but not required.
