'' Microbial corrosion (MIC) is a type of corrosion which involves many types of micro-organisms, including bacteria. This type of corrosion is very dangerous as it can manifest itself in such a way that can ve mistaken with other types of corrosion. MIC is important not only in maintenance and protection but also in design and commissioning phases.

With regard to MIC, there are many “myths� In this one-day course some of most important myths about microbial corrosion is mentioned and discussed. Some of these myths are:

1) Sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) are the most important organisms in MIC.
2) Numbers of specific groups of bacteria can be used to predict corrosion.
3) Stainless steels are more resistant to MIC than carbon steels.
4) Applying an over-voltage of 100 mV on the CP potential will make the structure SRB-proof for sure.
5) Polymers are more resistant to MIC than metals.
6) Copper and copper alloys are not affected by micro-organisms.

The course will deal with MIC and the associated myths so that the attendees will be able to use their knowledge in assessing design, manufacturing, commissioning and maintenance as well as day-to-day practices.
