Course Description:
'' The standards of the Nursing Attendant / Health Care Aide program have been identified by Alberta Health and Wellness in conjunction with the health care industry in the Governement of Alberta Health Care Aide Program.
Delivery of the program is 22 weeks. (New intakes start every five weeks.) During Lab instruction the students are taught basic care nursing skills (e.g., catheter care, transferring, vital signs, aseptic sterile techniques, etc.).
Following the Lab sessions, the students attend the Instructed Clinical, which is conducted at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre OR a similar facility. Students are under the direct supervision of instructors who are Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. Small groups of five to six students facilitate maximum instructional benefit for the participants.
Beginning week 15 of our program, students participate in a five-week full time Work Experience. Students are assigned a preceptor at their placement site and are expected to demonstrate work readiness in terms of skills, attitude and reliability. Work experience sites include, extended care facilities, palliative care, assisted living, and active treatment (i.e. cardiovascular ICU, pediatrics, organ transplant, etc.). Students may also complete the work experience component in schools assisting students with cognitive and physical exceptionalities. An additional practicum involves placement in a Home Care setting.
Evaluation An extensive evaluation is completed by the instructor at the conclusion of the four-week clinical. A shorter evaluation is completed at the conclusion of the Work Experience & Home Care placement.
Students are certified in level C of CPR, First Aid and in the Standard Precautions Infection Control Hand Washing Program. Also included in the Program is:
Medication Administration (developed in collaboration with Alberta Association of Registered Nurses) Diabetes-Blood Glucose Monitoring (reviewed by the Canadian Diabetes Association) Specimen Collection (developed in collaboration with Dynacare Kasper Medical Laboratories) Protect Your Back (endorsed by the Workers�Compensation Board of Alberta) Supportive Pathways ...''
