'' Recent research has shown that Australians are generally ’under-insured’. Providing tax effective financial protection for clients and their dependants is a significant element in the financial planning process.

Legislative change and market developments over recent years have impacted the provision of advice in this area. This module considers a number of taxation considerations associated with life insurance applications both within and outside of the superannuation environment.

Key issues critical to the provisions of life insurance advice include:

examining the taxation issues and their application both within and outside superannuation;

structuring insurance which is affordable and provides appropriate benefits for the individual client and their family; and

potential strategy applications and key factors to be considered.
Tax Effective Risk Solutions is designed to:

explain how to calculate the tax treatment of a lump sum superannuation benefit paid in the event of total and permanent disability;

explore the relative merits of holding TPD cover within and outside of superannuation;

provide an understanding of how to establish a tax effective disability income stream;

examine how a lump sum death benefit containing insurance proceeds will be taxed;

outline the consequences of paying superannuation death benefits including insurance proceeds to non-dependants for tax purposes; and

identify strategies available to assist clients to optimise superannuation benefits, including insurance proceeds, payable on their death.
