Course Description:
'' This course offers two specialisations. The Linguistics specialisation is suitable for students with a good working knowledge of AUSLAN, or another sign language, who wish to pursue research in the area. It covers the linguistics and sociolinguistics of sign language, the study of Deaf culture and Deaf community (including Deaf history), and a detailed study of the methodologies appropriate to the study of non-literate languages and minority cultures. The Interpreting specialisation covers three key areas: . Theory and practice of interpreting, focusing on issues such as simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, and note-taking and contrastive linguistics of signed languages (e.g. AUSLAN) and English. Students also study ethics and the professional code of conduct. . Cultural studies, through which students are expected to develop a good general knowledge of current affairs and a clear understanding of the procedures of interaction, particularly in meetings and conferences. . Research methodology, in which students are introduced to appropriate methodologies for studying interpreting involving non-literate languages, and carry out a small research project. ...''
