Teacher/Instructor: Leonard Metcalf
Term: 2 days

Course Description:

'' This workshop is the ideal place to start learning about your new camera. It is also a good place to refresh your photographic practice if it is a little rusty, change from film to digital, or start from scratch. If you are reasonably competent with your camera, understand and can control your camera then you should consider the mentor program or individual photographic tuition. Len offers a number of advanced workshops that may also be suitable.

The workshop starts on with optional post dinner drinks and introductions with Len at Leura, on the the evening prior.

The first day starts with developing your network with the other participants and ensuring that the workshop is going to cover your own learning needs. Len will modify and adapt each workshop to suit the needs of the attending participants. Len will then take you through easy explanations of the functions and settings of your camera. It is here that you will start to learn about how to start choosing the appropriate settings for the images that you are trying to achieve. You will learn about apertures, shutter speeds, ISO, file formats, films, exposure, holding your camera, and camera care. You will also gain an understanding of the creative process, and explore the basics and rules of composition.

After a fantastic lunch Len will take you out for a photographic shoot in the stunning local landscape of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Wilderness. A UNESCO listed world heritage site. During this first shoot you will explore your creativity, and trial the mornings lessons. Len will review your work as you progress, give you feedback, encouragement and offer advice. Individual shooting situations will be discussed along the way. In particular lighting in the field. The locations are right on your doorstep so you won’,t be spending more than 15 minutes traveling (transport is included).

After the afternoons shoot, a relaxing shower, bath or spa (depending on your accommodation choice) you will meet up for dinner, relaxation and an exploration of the world of photography. This will be through the examination of photographic images of master photographers, discussion and critique.

On the second early risers can join Len on a dawn photographic shoot. While those that wish to take it easy can meet the rest of the group after breakfast, for a different photographic shoot. Locations for each shoot will be negotiated with each workshop group based on their interests and the availing weather conditions. These may vary from portraiture, architecture, gardens, landscapes, creeks and waterfalls, and mountain life in the local village.

Lunch will arrive before you realise it, as you will have been engrossed in your image making. Practicing and perfecting new techniques.

After lunch you retreat back to the classroom, where you get the opportunity to review and extend your knowledge, critique and review your work, and look at the next steps in the creative process. Len will demonstrate some of his methods he uses, when it comes to printing his work. He will show you how to set up a simple digital darkroom and home based film developing system. Len will show his set up for alternative processes, mounting and framing.

During the weekend you will have the opportunity to have your portfolio of existing work critiqued by Len.
