Course Description:
'' Martier’s Hair Design Program is designed to produce highly skilled and motivated professional Hair Designers dedicated to quality of service to the customer. The course will be taught using a combination of theory, self-study, and hands-on practical training. Students will be taught the necessary skills based on the following curriculum.
Professional Image:
�Guidelines to maintain a healthy body and mind. �Qualities of effective physical presentation. �Definition of personality. �Qualities of effective communication. �Human Relations and a Professional Attitude. �Professional Ethics.
Bacteriology:
�Identify the types and classifications of bacteria. �Bacterial growth and reproduction. �The relationship of bacteria to the spread of disease. �Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Decontamination and Infection Control:
�The importance of Decontamination. �Define sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization. �Safe handling and the use of disinfectant products. �Cleaners, equipment, and disinfectants used in salons. �Universal sanitation and the responsibilities of a salon professional.
Properties of the Scalp and Hair:
�The purpose of hair. �Definition of hair. �Composition of hair. Facts relating to hair structure, growth, and distribution. �Theory of the life and replacement of hair. �Causes of changes in hair color. �Analysis of hair. �Disorders of hair. �Basic scalp care. �Scalp manipulation techniques. �Scalp and hair disorders commonly seen in salons and which can be treated in the salon.
Draping:
�Methods of draping and preparing clients for cosmetology services. �Draping for wet hair services. �Draping for chemical services. �Draping for dry hair services.
Shampooing, Rinsing, and Conditioning:
�Hygiene of the hair and scalp. �When, why and how to brush hair. �Procedure for shampoo manipulations. �The meaning of pH levels in shampoos. �Types of shampoos. �Types of rinses.
Haircutting:
�Professional haircutting as the foundation for hairstyling and other salon services. �Proper hair sectioning in professional haircutting. �Basic hair cutting implements and their use. �Techniques of hair thinning. �Techniques for razor and scissor cutting.
Finger Waving:
�Purpose of finger waving. �Types of finger waves. �Finger waving procedure.
Wet Hairstyling:
�Definition of hairstyling. �Basic elements of pin curl hairstyling. �The implements used in hairstyling and their proper care and use. �Analysis of a client’s appearance prior to a hairstyling service.
Thermal Hairstyling:
�Purpose of thermal waving and curling. �Proper thermal wave techniques and implements. �Safety measures used in thermal waving. �Blow-dry styling. �Use of implements, techniques, and cosmetics in blow-dry styling. �Air waving. �Use of implements and techniques in air waving.
Permanent Waving:
�Definition of permanent waving. �Chemistry products used in permanent waving. �The relationship between hair structure, perm chemistry, and perming techniques. �Client consultation and hair analysis. �Proper rod selection and sectioning, parting, and wrapping techniques. �Safety precautions required for permanent waving. �Proper perming techniques.
Haircoloring:
�Correct procedures for hair coloring including consultation, analysis, and strand test procedures. �Principles of color theory and their importance to haircoloring. �The classifications of haircolor and their activity on the hair. �The activity of Hydrogen Peroxide in hair coloring. �Hair lighteners and their use. �Single and double process tint applications. �Preventative and corrective steps to avoid or solve haircoloring problems. �Safety precautions to follow during haircolor procedures.
Chemical Hair Relaxing and Soft Curl Permanent:
�The purpose of chemical hair relaxing. �Products used in chemical hair relaxing. �The difference between sodium hydroxide relaxers and thio relaxers. �Three basic steps of chemical hair relaxing. �T analysis for chemical hair relaxing treatments. �Procedures used for sodium hydroxide hair relaxing service. �Procedures used for an ammonium thioglycolate hair relaxing process. �Procedures used for chemical blow out. �Procedures used for soft curl permanents.
Thermal Hair Straightening (Hair Pressing):
�Purposes served by hair pressing. �Analysis of client’s hair and scalp condition prior to a hair pressing. �Products required for hair pressing. �Procedures for soft pressing and hard pressing. �Safety precautions to be observed in hair pressing.
Artistry of Artificial Hair:
�Reasons people wear wigs. �Types of wigs, extensions and hairpieces. �Procedures for taking wig measurements. �Methods used to order wigs. �Procedures for blocking and fitting a wig. �Procedure for cleaning a wig. �Procedures for shaping, setting, and styling a wig. �Procedure for coloring a wig. �Types of hairpieces and their uses. �Safety precautions to be followed in handling wigs.
The Nail and Its Disorders:
�Describe the structure and composition of nails. �Describe the structures adjoining and affecting nails. �Discuss how nails grow. �List the various disorders and irregularities of client’s nails. �Recognize diseases of the nails that should not be treated in the beauty salon.
Theory of Massage:
�Describe the purpose of massage. �Describe the manipulations used in massage and how they are applied. �Identify the various types of massage movements and how they are applied. �Identify the motor nerve points of the face and neck. �List the physiological effects of massage.
The Skin and Its Disorders:
�Describe the structure and composition of the skin (Histology). �List the functions of the skin. �Define important terms relating to skin disorders. �Discuss which skin disorders may be handled in the beauty salon and which should be referred to a physician.
Cells, Anatomy, and Physiology:
�The functions of human cells. �Types of tissues. �Structures and functions of the human body. �Organs and systems of the human body and how they function.
Electricity and Light Therapy:
�Define the nature of electricity and name two forms of electricity. �Explain the proper use of the different types of electricity and the safety precautions that must be followed when using electricity. �Define the four types of current and explain the benefits derived from the various currents. �List and describe electrical appliances available for use in the salon. �Explain light therapy. �Demonstrate the proper uses of light therapy.

�Definition of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. �Types of matter. �The composition of elements, compounds, and mixtures. �The properties of matter, elements, compounds and mixtures. �Acids and alkalies. �Chemistry of water. �Classifications of shampoos and types of conditioners. �The composition of hair before, during and after permanent waving and chemical hair relaxing. �The composition of hair before, during, and after haircoloring. �The physical and chemical classifications of cosmetics. �The basic chemistry, types, and action of professional products.
