Course Description:
'' The Leadership Development Program recognises that the transition to a more senior leadership position requires a personal re-invention and focus on three key areas:
Firstly, leadership now has a greater focus on motivating and inspiring rather than command and control. We need greater self awareness and resilience to be in a position to build a high performing team.
Secondly, the emerging leader spends a lot of their time influencing upwards, downwards, sideways and externally. Influencing without authority skills are therefore critical. Actors from NIDA will help participants communicate with impact.
Finally, emerging leaders need to look at their market, customers and organisation through a different set of lenses. This program will challenge participants in the way they think.
The program is both academically rigorous to stretch participants thinking while also providing practical techniques to implement in the workplace.
Content
Self Leadership
Before we can manage others, we must first manage ourselves. The session starts by exploring emotional intelligence - a set of interpersonal and social skills that determine how well individuals handle themselves and their relationships with others. We cover self-awareness, identifying blind spots and creating a personal development plan.
Managing Others
This session explores some of the fundamentals of leadership. We start by covering the impact you have on others and understanding what motivates behaviour. We then move on to discuss models around goal setting, delegation and giving feedback.
Leading a High Performing Team
As an emerging leader, you understand that your ability to deliver your departments results depends upon your ability to engage with your team. This session covers engagement strategies, having difficult conversations, managing stars and developing team capability.
Negotiation Skills
Much of a leaders day is spent negotiating about a diverse range of topics. This session explores how to develop a negotiation strategy, understanding the other partys interests, and finding ways to achieve a win-win outcome. Role plays will provide a fun environment for participants to apply new skills.
Power and Influence
This session starts by exploring how leaders derive power. For some, this may be positional power. Others gain power through their expertise, network or personal charisma. We then move on to discuss stakeholder management, influencing strategies and building networks.
Communicate with Impact (NIDA)
Effective leaders understand that communication is not about emails or PowerPoint presentations. Instead, communication is the ability to challenge and inspire others to think differently. Participants will work with a professional NIDA actor to explore important communication skills such as voice projection, creating a presence and communicating with impact.
Wicked Problems
Leadership often requires us to solve what appear to be unsolvable problems. This session will examine our views of the world and how our expectations, education and training, and our cognitive abilities affect how we see and try to solve problems. We discuss new ways of looking at our world and ways to deal with complexity, chaos and confusion.
Leading Change
Most leadership roles today have a turnaround change component. This session starts by discussing the underpinning reasons why change is difficult and personal strategies for leading change.
