Course Description:
'' General Managers and Human Resource executives have never had a greater role to play in their organisations success. There is no shortage of opportunities or initiatives within organisations. However, typically, what is holding back organisations are people issues.
A recent MGSM focus group of HR Directors identified three key characteristics of successful HR Leaders:
1. They speak the language of the business, not HR-speak 2. They confidently lead across the business and influence others in a trusted advisor status 3. They are flexible in adapting "best practice" initiatives to their organisation
Content
Characteristics of successful HR Leaders
If our people are our greatest asset, why do many HR Leaders struggle to gain traction with initiatives? This session explores potential pitfalls for HR leaders, the reasons why HR and line management seem to speak different languages, your role as an HR Leader and the characteristics that differentiate successful HR Leaders.
Strategy Development
HR plays a key role in the development of an organisations strategy. This session explores strategy development models such as Porters Five Forces, McKinsey 7S and capability-based strategy. We also discuss HRs role in organisational strategy development.
Financial Management Skills
While HR Leaders most value their people skills; finance is still the language of business. This session covers financial management fundamentals such as understanding financial statements, profit, cash flow and net present value. We also explore what drives share price and how to develop a business case that reflects business drivers.
Strategic Leadership
This session starts by exploring the fragility of both organisational and personal success. We provide a model to address how successful leaders balance performance with organisational and personal renewal. We also discuss the critical relationship between the HR Leader and the CEO, and the important role of leading the HR team and developing the next generation of HR talent.
Project Management Skills
HR initiatives can easily struggle due to poor project management, rather than the quality of the initiative. This session provides a set of project management tools and techniques such as project scoping, resource planning and juggling multiple priorities.
Power and Influence
Influencing without authority is a key skill for HR Leaders to develop. This session starts by exploring the different sources of power - positional, expertise, network and charismatic. We then discuss alternative influencing strategies which can be used for communicating with individuals or groups.
Communicate with Impact (NIDA)
In a world where individuals are being bombarded with different messages, effective communication needs to be engaging, relevant and memorable. Participants will "tread the boards" with a professional NIDA actor to explore important communication skills such as voice projection, creating a presence and communication with impact.
HR Strategy
HR Leaders bring a unique skill to the executive team around thought and practice leadership in areas such as sustainability, talent management and Best Employer. We explore how HR Leaders can embrace marketing concepts around the concept of creating an employment brand. We close this session by discussing the HR Leaders role in preparing their organisation for the future.
Moving Forward
The final session focuses on how HR Leaders can re-invent themselves. We provide guidance on creating a Personal Development Plan, and discuss how to apply key learnings into their role.
