Course Description:

'' With the view that intelligent, persistent questioning yields a high return on the time invested, MGSM’s finance faculty have developed the Managing Risk program to provide a critical perspective on financial analysis and its application in decision-making at a strategic level.

The Managing Risk aims to equip managers with an increased capacity to apply rigour to their decision-making and to better anticipate and articulate the financial implications of their choices.

As the business environment becomes increasingly competitive, managers must have a sound understanding of the many aspects of finance, accounting and performance management.

Every decision made in business today has financial ramifications and financial information invariably underpins critical business decisions. Yet, all too often, senior managers make decisions based on data that is presented to them, without an adequate appreciation of the assumptions drawn upon in its preparation and the implications this may carry for the outcome of their decisions.

With the view that it pays to be inquisitive, this program provides a critical perspective on decision-making. It is based on the belief that intelligent, persistent questioning yields a high return on the time invested.

Content

The Managing Risk is designed to assist senior decision makers to better anticipate and understand the financial ramifications of their decisions. Participants will learn to more thoroughly critique proposals put to them and also, to ask more probing questions of colleagues and professional advisers when making critical decisions.

Drawing on their own experience as practitioners, consultants and educators, the program faculty will illustrate their approach to financial analysis and decision-making in an insightful and innovative manner. Faculty will also make extensive use of recent case studies and interactive exercises based on high profile Australasian organisations.

During the program, a number of key questions will be addressed, including:

How do incentive structures relate to financial performance and are the incentives in place at your organisation reinforcing or hindering performance improvements?
How do intangible and intellectual capital assets relate to value creation? Is all the talk about these issues just hype or is there substance to be recognised?
Is growth the most potent driver to improved financial performance or could putting the brakes on actually be the better choice?
Why does your organisation believe that it can win at the acquisitions game when so many others have failed consistently?
How do non-financial factors relate to the financial performance of an organisation and how can this relationship be managed?
How can you evaluate the extent to which your organisations’ performance measurement and management systems are aligned with its key performance drivers?
