Course Description:
'' Share an Outward Bound course with a group of diverse teachers and educators from across the country. Learn more about experiential education and the Outward Bound program. Challenge yourself. Have fun. Gain new leadership skills. Return to the classroom refreshed and recharged.
On course, you backpack over and through the rugged Appalachian Mountains. Collaborate with your crewmates to travel on and off the trail using a map and compass. Work as a team to expedition deep into a national forest, and participate in a service project. Share the woods with white-tailed deer, raccoons, owls and falcons. Hike up steep passes to incredible vistas. Refill your water bottles from cool mountain streams. Set up a tarp, cook backcountry meals, and fall asleep at night to the song of the rhythmic cicadas.
Rock climbing on this course exposes you to some of the most exciting and renowned rock sites in the East. Start out bouldering, learning how to balance and move over rock. Practice tying your harness. Exercise craftsmanship as you tie and apply knots such as the figure 8 and bowline. Build trust in your crewmates as you belay and climb. Then, utilize your skills on 5.4 to 5.9+ climbs. Each day you climb, you learn and practice new techniques, progressing with encouragement from your crew and instructors.
The educator¡¯s course teaches technical skills within the context of North Carolina Outward Bound¡¯s core philosophies. These are environmental stewardship, fitness, compassion, leadership, craftsmanship and self-reliance.
Your course will also include opportunities for team building, environmental learning, solo, a service project, a personal challenge event, a student-led final expedition and leadership training.
