Course Description:
'' Focus on navigation techniques: orienteering (use of map and compass), route finding, estimating distance and time, pacing, contour following, landscape identification, resection, micro-navigation. Also covered: trip preparation and moving safely, group dynamics, leadership responsibilities, minimum impact camping, use of ice axe for braking and cutting steps, and self-belay for moving on steep terrain. Instruction in the use of mountain rope only, with no technical gear - natural belays, use of hand lines, classic rappel and lowering to negotiate steep steps. Avalanche safety, winter camping skills, and snow shoe travel will be covered if conditions require. ...''
