Course Description:
'' The Keyboard Institute of Technology brings MIĄ¯s inventive philosophy of music education to an instrument that is both deeply traditional and continually evolving. The KIT program combines fundamental keyboard skills, performing experience and innovative technology as it prepares contemporary keyboard players for careers on the concert stage and in the recording studio. Explore the range of contemporary keyboard styles including funk, R&B, blues, jazz, country, rock, fusion, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian under the direction of some of LAĄ¯s best working professionals. Just as important, learn to handle contemporary keyboard technology through studies in sequencing, sampling, drum programming, production, digital recording and MIDI arranging as well as how to set up and manage a live rig. KIT is not a black-and-white piano school¨CitĄ¯s a full-color keyboard experience.
BACHELORS DEGREE PROGRAM The KIT Bachelors Degree Program offers conservatory-style training in commercial music adapted to the needs of the contemporary electric keyboard player. Built around a strong foundation in keyboard playing techniques, stylistic performing experience and musicianship, the fully accredited Degree Program incorporates the broader, deeper elements of a college-level music education to produce versatile professional keyboard players. For details, please visit the Degree Program page.
PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM The KIT Performance Program is designed to raise your technical skills, musicianship and performing experience to a level that will allow you to play any style of music you choose. The one-year (four quarter) KIT Performance Program offers the complete spectrum of contemporary keyboard styles within MIĄ¯s unique, hands-on, performance-intensive environment. As a KIT student you not only learn to play live, you learn to use the sequencing and sampling capabilities that have made keyboards an indispensable recording tool. A combination of core classes, live playing workshops, private lessons, open counseling and electives as well as seminars and clinics make KITĄ¯s Performance Program the number-one choice in contemporary keyboard education.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM If your goal is to be a professional working keyboard player, the KIT Professional Program is designed for you. This six-month (two quarter) program is designed for advanced players (Performance Program grads or the equivalent) who want to give their playing professional polish and versatility. The Professional Program emphasizes the upper-level technical skills, technology, musicianship, performing experience and music industry career chops that keyboard players need in order to compete as working musicians. At the same time, the Professional Program provides the ideal opportunity to spread your wings creatively, expanding your musical range and going deeper into the heart of the playing that inspires you.
KIT ENCORE PROGRAM For keyboard players who have a limited amount of time or who wish to concentrate in a certain area without the requirements of a certificate program, the non-certificate Encore Program is ideal. After an initial evaluation, as a KIT Encore student you will receive personal guidance as you create your own mix of classes, concentrating on a single specialty or experimenting with a wide range of subjects as you see fit. KIT Encore students can also choose designated classes from other MI programs to create a customized, multi-instrument curriculum. Please visit the Encore Program page for more details.
KIT ELECTIVE CLASSES Current KIT elective classes are listed below. See the All-School Electives page for more choices, and designated electives from other MI programs are also available. Download or order a current Course Catalog for more information, and email or call an Admissions Representative for the most current information about the availability of specific electives (most electives are not scheduled every quarter, electives may be added, modified or cancelled at any time prior to the start of a quarter, and some require prerequisites).
