PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program combines self-guided and (virtual) classroom learning. Self-guided learning consists of downloadable courseware, which the student may study at his/her own pace (about 6.5 hours per week). The student must also attend online classes with an instructor and other students every week for two (2) hours. Finally, the student is encouraged to participate in online forums and similar groups to practice his/her English and exchange ideas with other people (1.5 hours per week).

The full program includes nine (9) levels:

Basic 1, 2, 3 At these levels, students acquire the basic knowledge necessary to be functional in everyday situations. They also learn to talk about general topics. Various interesting activities are part of the learning process and help students master all the basic elements of the language.

Intermediate 1, 2, 3 At the intermediate levels, students add to their basic knowledge and become more confident using the foreign language. Contextual grammar and communication activities are essential ingredients of the courses. Students begin to function comfortably in most situations.

Advanced 1, 2, 3 More challenging texts are introduced, and the emphasis is put on speed and comprehension. Students start to focus on such skills as taking notes, summarizing, making presentations and writing essays. Students who complete these levels should have the necessary language skills to pursue technical or academic studies and function effectively in a work environment.

Each level requires two months (8 weeks at 10 hours per week) to complete (80 hours). There is an exam at the end of each level to assess the student’s skills so he/she can go on to the next level. Each level begins on the first Saturday of every second month.
