Course Description:
'' Anatomoy Students gain a thorough understanding of anatomy of the human body including bones, muscles, ligaments & joints, glands, circulatory, lymphatic and integumentary systems.
Physiology This course deals with the functions of the living human organism and its parts, the physical and chemical factors and processes involved. This course also provides students with a general level of understanding of the mechanisms of injury, disease and healing.
Patho-Physiology This course involves the study of human physiology, focusing on the general systems of the body that function to maintain homeostasis.
Kinesiology and Remedial Exercise The study of kinesiology involves an understanding of how the human body moves. The remedial exercise component enables the student to formulate therapeutic exercise programs for their clients.
Microbiology This course provides students with fundamental concepts of health and disease. We first look at micro-organisms and their role in disease, then examine the structure of Canadas Health Care System and the role of Massage Therapy within that framework.
Neurology This course covers structure and functions of the nervous system, including somatic motor and sensor pathways, spinal nerves and plexuses and cranial nerves. Students will be introduced to the autonomic nervous system, including the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
Nutrition The purpose of this course is to provide students with the fundamentals of nutrition and to cultivate an appreciation of the importance of nutrition in overall wellness.
Massage Theory and Technique This course in a combination of theory and hands-on practice. Upon the completion of this course, the student will be able to perform a full body relaxation massage and will qualify to enter the Clinical Practice course.
Client Assessment This course emphasizes techniques of observation, palpation and range of motion testing enabling the therapist to formulate an effective treatment plan.
Massage Treatments This course deals with the treatment of pathological conditions and occurrences by integrating knowledge from other sources. Students will develop their ability to formulate treatment objectives and plans, and to apply massage manipulations and techniques to specific conditions.
Hydrotherapy This course teaches the students the therapeutic uses of water and/or temperature in all its forms including: Hot & Cold Packs, Sauna, Whirlpool, Paraffin Wax and Salt Glow.
Human Relations, Ethics and Professional Regulation The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with government legislation and professional policies that govern their conduct and to help them identify and analyze ethical dilemmas encountered in practice.
Business and Entrepreneurship The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with basic principles so that they make informed business decisions.
OSCE �Objectively Structured Clinical Evaluation Prep Throughout the four terms at Elmcrest College, we test the students in clinical exam situations that follow the principles of the OSCE. In Term 4 we have several weeks of intensive practice so that students develop a comfort level in demonstrating all the techniques and treatments they have learned in an OSCE format.
