Course Description:
'' Every Outward Bound course is challenging, but ever-changing weather conditions and the unpredictable nature of frozen terrain make winter expeditions particularly demanding¡ªand exciting! On a winter expedition, you will experience vast frozen lakes, towering forests draped in snow and ice, you will travel through deep snow and you will learn how to stay warm and comfortable in this rugged, forbidding environment.
Working as a team, you will explore the woods of western Maine and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, traveling by dogsled, backcountry skis and snowshoes through these wild and beautiful landscapes. You will learn how to navigate when the trail is buried in ice and snow impedes your view, how to select the right wood to build a fire to prepare your meals, how to find water when the temperature is -20, and how to use snow as insulation, and you will learn how to build a wood-fired sauna, or sweat lodge, to rejuvenate your body after a day of ice-climbing.
Witness the awesome spectacle of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, then build your own ¡°quinzee¡± or snow-cave and spending a comfortable night in it or experience the thrill of racing through a forest behind a team of dogs. Explore an environment and meet a challenge that most can only imagine! ...''
