Course Description:
'' This course, based upon NFPA 1670, will focus on generic rescue skills and basic vehicle extrication skills necessary for a firefighter/rescuer to safely, and effectively extricate a victim(s) from entrapment in a vehicle.
The content will include the principles, techniques and practices, reflecting leading edge vehicle technology. The use of special equipment and resources such as manual hand tools, hydraulic and pneumatic tools and other ancillary equipment will be covered. Other topics will include scene assessment incident management systems and safety of victim(s) and rescuers.
This extrication course has been submitted to T.E.R.C. Canada (Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee) for endorsement.
Successful completion of the course will enable the student to complete the following:
Describe the procedure for sizing up an incident and overall situation involving vehicle extrication Describe the methods for conducting a victim(s) search Describe common principles, procedures and practices for stabilizing a vehicle extrication scene Define and explain various terms related to vehicle extrication Describe the roles and responsibilities of firefighter emergency responders in vehicle extrication Identify safety considerations related to types of vehicles and construction features and how they affect the victim(s) and rescuers including safety restraint systems Describe the different types of entrapping mechanisms encountered in vehicle-extrication rescue operations Describe the procedures, methods and equipment for stabilizing the vehicle Describe how to assess and stabilize victim(s) in vehicle extrications by utilizing emergency patient care supplies and equipment Describe methods of providing means of gaining access and providing egress from the vehicle, extricating and stabilizing victim(s)
Specific Practical Skill Learning Outcomes:
Size-up an incident and overall situation, anticipating alternative courses of action, noting hazards, environmental conditions and electrical complications so that, on arrival, duties can be initiated quickly, safely and effectively Stabilize the scene by taking necessary safety precautions such as crowd or traffic control, providing charged hose lines or extinguishers, eliminating all possible sources of ignition and isolating hazards, using warning devices, vapor suppressants and adequate lighting so that a safe working area is ensured Conduct a search for victim(s), using appropriate vehicle extrication equipment and rescue procedures so that the search is systematic and comprehensive Demonstrate the use of various extrication tools and equipment to extricate entrapped victim(s) Disarm the supplemental restraint systems (SRS) and stabilize the vehicle by using equipment such as wrenches, spanners, wooden cribbing, air bags, jacks, chains and tarpaulins so that during the extrication the vehicle remains stationary and minimizes potential injuries to rescuer or victim(s) Assess and stabilize victim(s) by utilizing patient care supplies and equipment, such as blankets, spinal boards, resuscitators and compresses so that life-threatening conditions are identified and treated, the victim(s) reassured and properly secured and can be removed from the vehicle with minimum risk of further injury Provide a means of gaining access and egress from the vehicle such as mechanically opening or relocating a door, a roof, a steering column, and dashboard and removing glass using hydraulic, pneumatic, and/or hand extrication tools in order to safely and expediently remove victim(s) Remove stabilized victim(s) from the vehicle to a safe area or transport so that additional injuries to the victim(s) are minimized during the extrication process Communicate with rescue team members using communications systems and terminology so that rescue evolutions are carried out safely and effectively ...''
