'' Rock Climbing in Virginia, Montana, and Wyoming Virginias largest, safest, and most comprehensive rock climbing program, period! Southwest Montanas only USFS permitted program through Montana Alpine Guides. Our Rock climbing courses feature some of the best climbing in Virginia and the Northern Rockies and rival both Seneca Rocks and Joshua tree on a learning basis. On all of our courses you will learn safety, technique, equipment identification, belaying, absailing (rappelling), basic knots, meteorology, and other various skills.
The OWLS Adventure Learning Center has developed an extensive climbing program to meet a variety of needs from beginner to advanced. We have both multi pitch and top rope sites that are private and lend a variety of features for climbing and rappelling. In addition to the technical skills you will learn, you and your group will learn about natural history, ecology, ecosystem management, geology and other fundamental environmental skills to preserve the integrity of the rock for those who will follow you. All courses are available to individuals, groups, schools, and corporations. Classes in sport, lead, and top rope available - difficulty: 5.6-5.11. Join the adventure. These courses are taught by our highly skilled instructors who will help you develop skills for use on the rock, at home, and in the office.

OWLS Rock Climbing, Rappelling, and Caving Programs
Basic Rock Climbing Rappelling (East Coast) If youve never climbed before or have limited experience, this is the course for you. The curriculum begins with our specialized "Deck School¡±, in which we focus on the basics. This includes; equipment identification and use, knots, commands, communication, safety, and hazards. The course then moves to our private climbing sites in the Blue Ridge Mountains where we work on climbing techniques, belaying, weight distribution, energy conservation, and individual moves. The remainder of the day you are on top-rope protected climbs of up to 120 feet on high angled granite rock faces. Excellent and personalized climbing instruction makes for a quality learning experience.

Comprehensive Rock Climbing School (East Coast) This is a 2-day course for the motivated or advanced beginner climber who wants to further his or her climbing. The focus is to provide a comprehensive understanding of anchors and protection while developing the students climbing techniques. You will be evaluated throughout the course with a spotlight on improving both your weak and strong points. You will also learn how to minimize overdoing or over complicating anchor set up thus maximizing your climbing time and giving you the skills to quickly evaluate someone else¡¯s anchor set up. This will allow you do more climbing and to know whether an anchor could be potentially unsafe.
Day 1 will begin with understanding concepts of protection: Balanced, weighted, equalized and redundant. We will then go over what is used for protection and HOW it is used (Nuts, hexes, stoppers, webbing, camming devices). The second half of the day will be spent on the rocks improving your climbing skills.
Day 2 will focus on anchor systems: Tying into boulders, tying into trees, artificial anchors, multi pitch anchors and the prevention of shock loading. The remainder of the day will again be spent on the rocks, doing top-roped climbs and a lead climb up to 5.10.

Adventure Camp for kids 12 and up (East Coast) Day 1: Back Packing and Orienteering on the Appalachian Trail. The kids will learn basic knowledge of navigation with maps and compasses on one of the most popular hiking trials in the world. The hike will start at Laural Springs in Wintergreen to Humpback Rocks where we will have lunch and return back to Wintergreen (total distance in about 9 miles). Along the way the kids will learn about local history and ecology along with reading topographic maps of the area, using compasses and much more.
Day 2: Rock Climbing On this day the kids will come up to Wintergreen to climb on our 60-foot granite rock wall located on the south face of Black Rock Mountain. Here they will learn the basics of climbing from belaying, knot tying and geology to equipment identification and ecology management. Difficulty level ranges from 5.6-5.11
Day 3: Caving On the third day we will take the kids in and under the rock they climbed on the day before and show them a whole new world of adventure that lie in the Glade Caves located just outside of Harrisonburg. Here they will learn about animals and insects that they normally will never see because most of them are edginess only to their specific cave. They will also learn about the geology that makes up the speleothems and how caves are made.
Day 4: Canoeing Day 4 will consist of cruising down the mighty James river in canoes. The kids will learn how to do different paddle strokes, trip planning, learn about fresh water ecosystems, and don¡¯t forget about having fun in the water.

Course Outline:
DAY 1 will be with an introduction to Rock Climbing and an overview of the five-day course: Orientation to equipment, get acquainted with the climbing site, environmental impact, climbing techniques, climb.
DAY 2 students will be given a case study assignment, and will be introduced to: Challenge by choice, leave no trace (LNT), climb smart, belying, more climbing techniques and will climb!
DAY 3 will focus on knots and anchor set up: Figure 8, bowline, water knot, butterfly, girth hitch, and prussic. Anchor set up will focus on: Solid, Equalized, Redundant, non-extending, and top rope management.
DAY 4 will focus on risk management: Perceived risks, actual risks, emergency procedures, and negligence. Students will climb .
DAY 5 will have a skills assessment and grades will be issued as pass/fail. The skills to be assessed will be: Knots, and top rope set up, belaying, safety, commands, ...''
