Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' A very inclusive course for beginners. This is how we teach our friends and family who want to learn to rock climb. Five full-days of instruction and practice climbing provide an extremely effective introduction to the sport with the extra climbing time so essential to your becoming a competent climber. The course is tailored to suit the students abilities and ambitions. The following course description is a good example. Day one brings a general orientation to climbing equipment, procedures, and safety followed by top rope climbing with emphasis placed upon familiarizing students with moving on rock and practicing the basics of top rope belaying and lowering. Students begin to develop proper climbing skills in a wide variety of situations.
Day two begins with a belay clinic addressing all types of belays, both leader and second with a representative selection of current belay devices. Students practice holding falls. The use of prussic slings for self rescue and escaping the belay in situations where the belayer is holding a helpless fallen leader is practiced. Proper belay anchors are demonstrated and students practice setting up belays. The afternoon is spent practice climbing on more challenging routes in Eldorado or Boulder Canyons. Students continue improving their climbing skills and broadening their climbing experience.
Day three begins with a rappel clinic covering all appropriate rappel techniques beginning with the simplest. Current rappel devices are used. Rappels of all degrees of steepness are made, including rappels on overhanging rock, until students become proficient in all situations. Rappel anchors are demonstrated and rappel safety is addressed. The use of prussic slings to ascend the ropes for self rescue is practiced. The rest of the day is spent practice climbing on more challenging climbs, furthering the students skills development.
Day four begins with a clinic on protection placement and removal. Students practice placing and removing all types of nuts from basic stoppers to cam devices. The use of slings for protection is demonstrated and practiced. Pitons and bolts are demonstrated. The afternoon is spent doing a multi-pitch climb which affords the opportunity for students to see the mornings subjects put into actual practice. This climb is selected to enhance the continuation of the students learning process as rock climbers and demonstrate the importance of climbing as a team.
Day five, the final day of the course, consists of a long, multi-pitch graduation climb that requires students to put into practice everything they have learned in the previous lessons. The climb tests students skills and abilities and provides an ideal culmination to the course. Equivalent to Beginning Rock and Intermediate Rock with much more practice climbing time. The course prepares you to efficiently climb second on multi-pitch climbs with emphasis upon planning the climb and mental preparedness. You develop climbing proficiency and acquire the knowledge and experience to make intelligent informed decisions, sharing completely in the overall responsibilities of determining climbing strategies and not simply relying upon others to take care of you.
