'' This course is designed for the working or aspiring writer who wants to create compelling mystery fiction. The course gives you a jumpstart on getting ideas, developing characters, plotting, planting clues, and getting published. Worksheets, a web-based library of resources, book recommendations and examples from published and unpublished mystery fiction guide you through the process of developing a workable story idea and getting your work published. Outcomes: Students will learn to: 1) Find ideas for mystery stories 2) Turn ¡°an idea¡± into a working story 3) Build believable characters 4) Plot a mystery novel 5) Use clues to move the story forward 6) Manage the business and creative aspects of the writer¡¯s life 7) Identify possible publishing opportunities 8) Submit manuscripts Assessment: Students demonstrate knowledge by developing a journal that includes: 1) A basic idea 2) A list of characters 3) A plot outline 4) A list of clues and plot progression points 5) A writing schedule 6) A list of possible publishers 7) A ¡°pitch¡± sentence Week 1: Week 1 ¨C Getting started in mystery fiction In this lesson you will look at the various subgenres in mystery fiction, find your ¡°idea,¡± and develop it into a workable story plan. You will use online reading assignments, web-based market research, and a worksheet to develop your story idea. Week 2: Week 2 ¨C Characters In this lesson you will learn how to create believable characters, and start work on your protagonist and antagonist. Using a character development worksheet, you will create ¡°living¡± characters for the story you¡¯re planning. Online reading assignments will help you with the character development assignments. Week 3: Week 3 ¨C Plotting You will learn the basics of plotting a mystery novel and write out a ¡°plot summary¡± of your novel idea. Online reading and examples from published and unpublished mystery fiction will guide you in developing your plot summary. Week 4: Week 4: Clues and Forward Motion In this fourth lesson you will learn how and when to use clues and ¡°red herrings,¡± how to keep the suspense building and how to create forward motion in your story. Online reading assignments will guide you through this process. Week 5: Week 5: The Writing Life and Publishing In this lesson you will learn how to manage the creative aspects of your work, how to take care of the business end of writing, and how to determine what agent and/or publisher is right for you. You will learn how to format manuscripts and query publishers.
