Beginning Active Server Pages

School/Trainer:

JER Group
Dawsonville, Georgia, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' Soon you are going to discover how easy it is to bring your web pages to life with ASP. Anyone can learn this, with or without a programming background. To me, it’s magic. Every time I have a page welcome a visitor by name or extract information from a database without complicated CGI scripts, I am truly amazed and I hope you will be too. If you are like me, you will appreciate how much time and money ASP saves you and wonder why you haven’t tried it before. Everything you do is right there on the web page yet hidden from prying eyes. And it is POWERFUL, but most importantly, it is completely cross browser compatible!
In this course you will build a strong foundation of Visual Basic Script, the native language of ASP. Just remember, this is a programming course, yet VBScript is the easiest programming language to learn and it is much more forgiving than JavaScript. We will also cover a lot of concepts, like client-side and server-side scripting that will give you a clear understanding of what drives ASP. At the end of the course I will give you a hint of ASP power as we toy with the ease of adding and extracting user form information to and from a database.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s go!!!
Outcomes:
During the course, students will be given assignments in the form of scripts to write and test. These scripts will be submitted for review and graded on a pass/fail basis.
Assessment:
You will be able to:

A. Differentiate between and write client side and server side VBScript.

B. Process, store and output form data to the User

C. Declare and use numeric variables to make simple calculations.

D. Declare, manipulate and use string variables to display in web pages.

E. Work with and manipulate date and boolean variables in VBScript.

F. Create and manipulate arrays

G. Use branching, jumping, and looping statements to control actions in your web pages.

H. Write form data to a table in a database.

Week 1:
The start of great things! Learn all about what ASP is and how it works. You’ll soon learn there is no mystery to creating dynamic sites. You’ll also get to try your hand at writing client-side and server side script. Don’t worry, I won’t make you create a page that announces "Hello World"!
Week 2:
There has to be more to forms than e-mailing user data to someone. We’ll take that form data and manipulate it and display it. Then we’ll customize our response to the user based on what they put in their form. This is where you start to understand the power of ASP.
Week 3:
Well, it has to come sometime. You simply can’t program in any language without knowing all about it’s variables. So we will spend 2 weeks making sure you know your dates from your booleans and your numbers from your strings. In the mean time we’ll have some fun playing with them. We’ll add, subtract, slice, dice, convert and concat.., concaten..,well it means put them together.
Week 4:
If you read week 3, you already know that in week 4 we are still working with variables.
Week 5:
This is what we’ve all been waiting for. You could spend a fortune and too many brain cells learning about DAO, ADO, ODBC, OLE-DB... But we are going to skip all that and go straight for the useful stuff. We will use ASP to collect some form data, insert it into a database and write another page to get the information back out again. It will give you enough to impress your friends, but not enough to be dangerous. Well, maybe!
