Course Description:
'' Indexes are chosen by the optimizer based on information that is perceived to be true. Study actual benchmark statistics for such actions as creating indexes, running update statistics and executing various queries under a number of real-life circumstances. Actual statistics on time and space requirements for indexes will enable System and Database Administrators to efficiently create and maintain the right indexes. Course Objectives : Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: Document the "behind the scenes" steps of creating an index Provide insight into why creating indexes require additional space and time Explain how the optimizer can sometimes choose the wrong access method Understand the optimizers need for statistically accuracy Demonstrate actual time and space requirement for building indexes and running update statistics Identify ways to reduce space requirements for building indexes Course Topics:
Index selection for various queries. Index structures and index record layouts. I/O requirements for accessing various indexes. The optimizer. Systabstats and sysstatistics Perception versus reality. Concept of majority. Statistical accuracy. Manually changing perception. The create index process. Time and space statistics on the creating index process. The update statistics process. Time and space statistics on the updating statistics process. Time statistics on queries using different locking schemes, types of indexes, index record lengths and volumes of data.
