'' Whilst components and component based development have been around for many years, it is only recently that component based development (CBD) has become a development strategy in its own right, with journals, standards and powerful forces fighting for market share in it. Everybody seems to be talking about it--so what exactly is it? Is it just a synonym for object technology? Is it a replacement for object technology? This course aims to define component based development and put it into perspective.
Duration and Construction The course lasts four days. Each day will start at 09.30 and finish at 16.30. The delivery is via lecture, exercise and discussion.
The days consist of two morning sessions and three, shorter afternoon sessions, with one hour for lunch. Time will be available after 16.30 for extended discussions or related issues.
Intended Audience Participants will be software engineers, team leaders, project managers and decision makers who want to understand what has been happening in the area of component based development, where it fits in with other technologies and who the key players are. Detailed courses are also available from Matrice; they include Introduction to Object Technology, Methods and the UML, Understanding CORBA and Enterprise JavaBeans.
Aims To be aware of the evolution of component based development To understand the relationships between components and object technology To understand the potential benefits of a component based approach and what must be done to realise them To understand the rôle and importance of middleware To be aware of the major approaches to component based development, including CORBA, Enterprise JavaBeans and COM To understand the strengths, weaknesses and trade-offs between the various approaches Numbers We recommend that there are no more than 12 participants, with the best results usually obtained when there are at least 8 participants. It is possible, by negotiation and mutual agreement, for more than 12 participants to be present.
