Introduction: Basic Principles and Practices, Recognizing Hazards and Risks in Construction Safety, Legislation
1.1 Injuries and illnesses Data in general, and in the construction sector
1.2 Unsafe Act/Unsafe Condition in Construction Site Premises (including Electrical Safety, and Housekeeping)
Exercise 1 Documentary Film on Unsafe Acts and Conditions, Perceptions on Health and Safety in a non-construction scenario. Participants are to comment on what they have observed in the film, identify hazards, risks, site of workplaces, perceptions on safety and health. This Exercise encourages an exchange of ideas where they can apply the first lecture. It will help them to understand the principles of Hazards, Risks, and Risk Management in the succeeding lectures and exercises.

Hazard and risk recognition, Health Impact of exposure, Risk Management
This Module will address the following health hazards common in the construction sector,
- Dust, Chemicals, Noise, Biological, ergonomic and psychosocial hazards and risks including violence, harassment, tobacco, drugs and alcohol, and stress
Exercise 3: Ergonomics
- Their Impact on Health and safety (e.g Pneumoconiosis, Silicosis, Tobacco, Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, Dermatological problems, HIV/AIDS, Drugs and alcohol, Stress, Violence, Sexual Harassment, etc.)
- Risk Management : Specific Policies and Legislations, Programs and Activities and examples of Good Practices.
- Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Safety and Waste Management

4.1 Routine Site safety Inspection

Day 5
5.1 Setting up the Construction Safety and health Program and Services in the Construction sector ( The program should be based on both DO 13 and Rule 1960 of the OSHS, and related Rules. See previous lectures on OSH Legislation, and other modules).

1961.03: Occupational Health Services:

(1) Functions: Without prejudice to the responsibility of each employer for the health, and safety of the workers in his employment, and with due regard to the necessity for the workers to participate in matters of occupational health and safety, occupational health services shall have the following functions as adequate and appropriate to the occupational risks of the establishment/undertaking.

(a) Identification and assessment of the risks from health hazards in the workplace,

(b) Surveillance of the factors in the working environment and working practices which may affect the worker’,s health, including sanitary installations, canteens, and housing where these facilities are provided by the employer,

(c) Advice on planning and organization of work, including the design of the workplace, on the choice, maintenance, and condition of machinery and other equipment, and on substances used in work,

(d) Participation in the development of programs for the improvement of working practices as well as testing and evaluation of health aspects of new equipment,

(e) Advice on occupational health, safety and hygiene, and on ergonomics and individual and collective protective equipment,

(f) Surveillance of worker’,s health in relation to work,
(g) Promoting the adaptation of work to the workers,
(h) Collaboration in providing information, training and education in the fields of occupational health and hygiene and ergonomics,

(i) Organizing of first-aid and emergency treatment, and

(j) Participation in analysis of occupational accidents and occupational diseases.
