'' In both business and private life we are all constantly making decisions which can have far-reaching and significant consequences for both our colleagues and ourselves. Apparently simple situations can turn out to have many causes and consequences which may not be immediately obvious.

Background :

Understanding the problem is a large part of the battle in moving towards making sound decisions. Exploring and reflecting on possible options and communicating the problem and options to others are also key parts of the decision making process. Idea Mapping techniques have a lot to offer in terms of helping us to structure our thinking, to explore possibilities and explain to others our understanding of a situation.

Aims :

This Idea Mapping seminar introduce three different approaches to organising ideas, namely Mind Mapping, Concept Mapping and Causal (cognitive) Mapping. Each approach has slightly different characteristics and the method that you choose to use in practice will depend both on the problem that you are addressing and your personal ¡°thinking¡± preferences.
In each case we will cover the theory and practice of the mapping method, and compare and contrast the different methods. Finally we will use at Decision Explorer®, a software package which has been specifically designed to support causal mapping. The software is supplied to delegates in advance and they should, if possible, bring a laptop to the workshop.

This one-day seminar is designed for those who are new to idea mapping methods, but will also be of interest to those who have already come across one method and are keen to learn other techniques. The teaching will comprise short presentations, discussions, practical exercises and case studies.

The key objectives for the day are :

To provide participants with a sound understanding of the history, development and distinct features of the idea mapping methods
To demonstrate how each technique works and to discuss their utility in both business and personal contexts
To give practice in each technique to the extent that they can be applied effectively after the seminar·
To give a more detailed insight into Causal Mapping as a business technique for problem definition and decision support
