'' The course demonstrates the use of software packages of which light versions may be freely downloaded. These and other cases are treated in a forthcoming book Uncertainty Analysis and High Dimensional Dependence Modelling (Wiley, 2005), with Dorota Kurowicka.
Decision-making under uncertainty requires defensible quantification of uncertainty, and assessments of dependence to construct mathematical models. Propagation of uncertainty and interpretation of results can be achieved through advanced Monte Carlo techniques. The course focuses on constructing mathematical models for high risk scenarios, both traditional (eg Aerospace, Nuclear Energy, Process sectors) as well as some new areas of increasing focus - Terrorism, Transportation, Natural catastrophes, Public health/environment.
Two case studies from the following areas:
Response reactions to fine particulate matter. This was studied under contract for the Kuwaiti government for quantifying damage resulting from the 1991 oil fires. The results formed the basis for damage claims brought before the United Nations Claims Commission.
Risk of campylobacter infection in chicken processing lines. This study involved modeling environmental transport of campylobacter bacteria and evaluation of control options.
