Training Course:

Intermediate ColdFusion MX

School/Trainer:

AcademyX
San Francisco, California, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' ColdFusion MX is known as one of the easiest and fastest languages with which to develop web sites. We’ll see during this class just how easy it is to unleash its power. We’ll create several common web site applications, such as a shopping cart and guestbook, and we’ll show you how to quickly integrate a database into your site.

Administering the ColdFusion Application Server

Configuring the ColdFusion server is done through a set of web pages on the server. Using these pages, we’ll show you how to display debugging messages, install "custom tags", and cache database recordset queries in memory. One example of a debugging message is a note at the bottom of each CF page indicating the number of milliseconds required to execute the page. Custom tags are additions to the base set of ColdFusion tags; during the class we’ll use one custom tag that creates GIF images on the fly. Cacheing (memorizing) database queries speeds up pages that query your database to retrieve records that rarely change, such as a list of your office’s branch locations.

Session and Application Variables

You can retain information about users between visits to your site using session and application variables. Session variables last for about 20 minutes and have values that are unique to each visitor to your site. In contrast, each application variable only has one value, and will last almost indefinitely. You’ll see how to create and manipulate these variables and discuss their typical uses. We will also examine the special application.cfm file that determines when session and application variables time out and disappear.

Lists

A list is a variable that has one name but holds more than one value. Lists are useful for tasks such as populating pull-down menu options and table rows. We’ll show you how to create, manipulate, and output lists. You’ll also see how to combine lists with session variables to easily create a shopping cart for your site.

File Input/Output

Every language has a means of manipulating files on the hard drive, and ColdFusion is no exception. We will show you how to read from, and write to, files. Using these techniques, you will be able to create a ColdFusion guestbook.

Creating a Data Source for Database Integration

The first step in making a database available to your ColdFusion code is to create a "data source" or "DSN". This can be done either through the Windows Control Panel called "ODBC Data Sources", or through the ColdFusion Administrator. We will show you how to set up both MS Access and SQL Server data sources.

Structured Query Language (SQL) Basics

A separate language is used within ColdFusion to manipulate records in a database. This language is SQL, and is standard among many database programs. Before getting into the ColdFusion integration, we will explain and illustrate the four basic SQL instructions: SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE.

Querying a Database in ColdFusion and Outputting Recordsets

After creating a data source and learning some SQL, you will be ready to create a ColdFusion page that connects to the data source and then inserts, updates, and deletes from our sample database. We will also show you how to select records from the database that match certain criteria, and then output them in your web page.

Custom Tags

There are hundreds of "custom tags" that other people have written to extend the ColdFusion language. Some of them are free; others cost between $40 and $100. We’ll show you how to install these custom tags using the ColdFusion Administrator. Custom tags allow for advanced image manipulation, credit card authorization, and many other functionalities. We’ll demonstrate a custom tag that dynamically creates a GIF image of a chart.
