And at times, it may seem to have little use or need for the written word. However, almost nothing could be farther from the truth. Clear and concise writing that, for instance, documents fact or persuasive writing that moves an audience to action are the cornerstones of business communication. In this introductory module, participants will discover the difference between business and other types of written communication, along with the cost of poor writing skills. The Passive Voice ¨C An Enemy You Can Defeat Nothing makes a piece of business writing more wordy than excessive use of the passive voice. In this module, participants will learn how to identify the passive voice and what they can do to quickly eliminate it from their writing. The Magic Bullet ¨C Five Guaranteed Ways to Improve Your Writing Module three introduce participants to fast and easy editing techniques, guaranteed to instantly improve problematic writing. Using their own work, participants will practice editing for clarity, style, and better understanding. Tools of the Trade - Commas, Colons, Semi-Colons, etc. Upon completing this module, participants will have an understanding of the nuts and bolts of punctuation: when and how to use commas, the difference between a hyphen and a dash, colons, exclamation marks, periods, and more. Booby Traps - Homonyms and Other Confused and Misused Words Accept vs. except, all ready vs. already, and ascent vs. assent - module four looks at common mistakes and how to easily avoid them. Slash, Burn, and Take No Prisoners - Removing Redundancy Cluttered writing clouds a message. In this module participants will practice removing unneeded words and wordy phrases, combining sentences that repeat information, and revising sentences that begin with expletives. Sudden Death - Words, Phrases, and Expressions to Avoid Sexist language, racist language, clichés, and pompous language have no place in business writing -- intentional or not. This module explores importance of language and how to avoid potential landmines in both written and spoken English.
