Course Description:

'' The objective of the Health Information Technology program is to prepare students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for an entry-level position in the field. Curriculum will provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to process, maintain, compile, and report health information data for patient care, reimbursement, facility planning, marketing, risk management, quality assessment, and research. Students will receive hands-on training in medical coding and abstracting procedures. Supervisory issues are taught, as well as medical/legal aspects of health information. Basic courses addressing the use of computers in these areas are also part of the program. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree.
Graduates of this program may abstract health records and compile reports on health care services; accurately assign code numbers to diagnoses and procedures for indexing health data and processing bills; answer legal, government, insurance company, and other inquiries for patient health information; and organize, analyze,

and evaluate health record content for
completeness and accuracy. Graduates may review and evaluate health records to assist with meeting accreditation guidelines, release patient information in accordance with applicable laws, and supervise human resources.
The length of the Health Information Technology program is seven quarters culminating in 102.5 quarter credit hours.
This program is represented to lead to multiple job opportunities and is not meant to lead to any particular outcome, including that specified in the program title.
