Training Course:

Visual & Game Programming

School/Trainer:

The Art Institute of Portland
Portland, OR, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' Now is the time to get into the game. While the video and online gaming industry continues to ride the wave of high demand, similar programming and artistic skills are also needed in the film and animation industries. The Visual & Game Programming program at The Art Institute of Portland can help give you the skills you¡¯ll need to stand out in these growing fields.

If you are a student in this program you are likely not only an avid gamer, but also a logical, structured thinker who has a keen attention to detail. You may not be as focused on the traditional arts (drawing, painting, sculpture) as our Game Art & Design students tend to be, but you have an appreciation for the principles of traditional art. You understand the importance of balance between the artistic and the technical, and you want to learn how to bridge the left-brain and right-brain concepts together to create a complete package for the gaming, film, or animation industries.

In addition to foundation art and general studies courses, students in Visual & Game Programming can expect to gain a stronger foundation in mathematics and science than their Game Art & Design counterparts. You are required to take an algebra & trigonometry course, as well as calculus, computer engineering and computer graphics courses. After a few quarters, you will begin to focus more on one of two tracks: toward technical directing or toward programming. The final year will be spent working closely with Game Art & Design students to create modified prototype games, so all students gain an understanding of how the whole team works together to create a product.

More than a traditional computer science program, the Visual & Game Programming curriculum at The Art Institute of Portland will help better align you with the industry. You¡¯ll have more exposure to the artistic side of game creation and a chance to work on more real-time, real-world challenges. Upon graduation, you will be prepared to enter the workforce in entry-level positions such as digital artist, character animator, texture artist and character modeler.
