'' The world of apparel design is a magical, frenetic place where dreams meet, blend and often conflict with reality ¨C an art form that draws the artistic and the technical folks who want to revolutionize the way we look.

Apparel design students at The Art Institute of Portland are competitive, focused and have a deep passion for the development of clothing and accessories. The program focuses on helping students develop skills in design, sketching and illustration, patternmaking, garment construction, critical analysis, sewing, draping, and computer-aided design. They learn to critique their creation as art, fashion statement, and as saleable garment. They study business practices, history, marketing, presentation, and entrepreneurship to support the creative side of design. Students move on to develop collections, with opportunities to showcase their creativity in fashion shows and competitions.

Portland - a city that is home to apparel giants Nike, adidas, Columbia Sportswear, Hanna Anderson and Pendleton - is also home to several small boutiques. It is a welcoming city, supportive of our apparel graduates whether they chose careers as independent designers or as corporate professionals. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions such as fashion designer, patternmaker, or apparel developer.
