Course Description:

'' The purpose of the program is to prepare students with the necessary skills and academic knowledge for entry-level positions in community and institutional pharmacies and long term care facilities.



This 1230 hour program provides an overview of the theory, principles, and practices of the pharmacy technician. Areas of study include accurately and safely processing prescriptions for both community pharmacies and hospital settings, parenteral and non-parenteral drugs, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmaceutical application software, sterile and non-sterile preparations, aseptic techniques, controlling inventory, keeping accurate and confidential records, third-party billing, acting within relevant legislation, and effectively communicating orally and in writing and as part of team. Included in the program are three internships, one in a hospital setting (3 weeks), one in a community pharmacy (3 weeks) and a third in a long-term care facility (2 weeks).



The student will receive a Diploma of Professional Studies (D.E.P) upon the successful completion of the program.

Graduates will be prepared to work as members of an interdependent health-care team. Graduates should find employment opportunities in community pharmacies, institutional pharmacies, and other environments such as mail order pharmacies, home care, patient education, and various other positions within pharmaceutical companies.



Potential entry-level employment opportunities will be in direct practice settings such as pharmacies in the community, the hospital, and other health-care facilities. Graduates may also find jobs in direct practice settings such as the pharmaceutical industry, computer software sales and support, and third-party payer organizations.
