Course Description:

'' This is a 360 hour per year, vocational course offering an introduction to learning about the animal care and land sector. The content covers a wide range of topics allowing the learner to investigate those related to training, the working environment and related educational subjects on animal care.
Progression
If successful, the candidate can progress onto a level 2 qualification such as the First Diploma in Animal Care or the First Diploma in Science.
Alternatively students may wish to enter into employment. This would be in assistance positions for kennels, catteries, horse stables or similar businesses.

The following units are to be studied:
Three core units:
Starting Work in the Land-Based Industries
Working Safely in Land-Based Industries
Skills Development in the Land-Based Industries
Two personal skill units:
Social Responsibility at Work
Financial Management
Three specialist units:
Caring for Small Animals
Water and Fish
The Environment

Teaching Strategies
The methods through which students will demonstrate knowledge includes producing a portfolio, compiled of: assignments, witness observations, video footage, collected data and experimental write ups. Diagrams, posters and leaflets will also be used to present the work.
Entry Requirements
Limited qualifications from GCSE grades D-G or equivalent. Experience in the related field and subjects will be considered as will student profile and motivation/enthusiasm. Work experience in a related subject is invaluable and will support entry onto the course.
