'' To ensure that Home Inspectors and other professionals understand the principles of construction of heritage buildings, and highlight the responsibilities of the Inspector to work within the principles of good conservation practice. Specifically that Home Inspectors:
Understand and comply with best practice conservation principles Understand legislation relating to the built heritage Know the principal differences in construction practice between heritage and more modern houses Are aware of the forensic investigations required to determine the causes of defects in heritage buildings
The course will be placed in the context of the Home Inspectors inspection and reporting requirements. It will include an understanding of the specialist requirements for inspecting heritage houses, their structures and materials and will highlight the important differences between heritage and more modern buildings.
Subjects covered include:
Outline of historic and heritage housing as part of the built heritage Listed buildings, conservation areas and legislation Masonry walls Timber, floor, roofs, staircases etc. Lime mortars, plasters and renders. Dampness and water penetration in historic buildings Cracking and movement Deterioration of materials There will be a post-course assessment of competence.
