Course Description:
'' This course is intended to provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies to work in a variety of social care settings. It also offers the opportunity for career development for those already employed in Social Care. The course provides a well established entry route to social work degree programmes offered by a number of Scottish Universities.
Structure The course is delivered over one year full-time course or over two years when studied on a part-time basis. Infill learning opportunities are available for some of the units but students must attend regularly. Flexible learning is available for a limited number of units.
There is an expectation that students on this course will be self-motivated independent learners. Generally assessment is carried out via college based assessment although work-based performance is assessed for the SVQ element in the course.
Content The course consists of 10 core credits and 2 elective credits. Four of the core credits form part of the SVQ Level 3 award in Care. The course will cover the following areas: - Social Care Theory and Practice - 2 credits - Sociology - 1 credit - Psychology - 1 credit - Social Care Policy - 1 credit
The Vocational Qualification component consists of: - Health and Safety - 1 credit - Protecting Individuals from Possible Harm - 1 credit - Developing Professional Practice - 1 credit - Promoting Effective Communication - 1 credit
In addition there are two elective units which allow you to study specific areas of social care in depth. These are delivered on a flexible basis. Avaialable electives include:- - Loss and grief. - Working in Partnership with People who have learning Disabilities. - Youth and Community Justice. - Mental Health
Students must complete 60 days of placement to achieve their HNC. Full-time students are given the opportunity to access placements organised by the college. The type of placements vary but students must be willing to work with a range of clients including the elderly, people with disabilities, people with mental health problems and children, young peopl and their families.
Part-time HNC students are expected to be in Social Care employment or be able to access their own placement. The college can give advice and information about this.
Placement performance ia assessed by experienced SVQ assessors.
