Course Description:
'' This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of graphic design. It focuses upon the development of the creative skills required for the design and presentation of visual information in areas such as corporate identity, advertising, posters, web pages, magazines and brochures.
You will use industry standard software to develop the creative design and technological skills required for employment in a graphic design related field for web or print.
Structure This course can be studied over one year full-time or two years part-time. Assessment is on a continuous basis throughout the duration of the course. The course is delivered in Art Space, our custom-built Art and Design learner base and in Digital Space, our Multimedia learner base in the Media Space building on the main campus.
Content The course is designed to develop your skills in a variety of subjects such as: - 2-Dimensional Design - Desk Top Publishing - Graphic Design for Corporate Identity, Book Illustration and Advertising - Typography - Web Design - Digital Photography.
You will study a wide range of illustration techniques and work in a variety of media as a well as honing firm design skills using state of the art digital packages such as Photoshop, In Design and Quark Xpress.
The course also contains core skills in communication, numeracy and IT and you will complete a Media Production group project related to your area of study.
Career Opportunities This is an introductory course offering you grounding in the art of visual communication and transferable skills, which can be used to gain employment in a number of areas such as marketing and the media.
Progression This course gives you an introduction to graphic design and could be used to gain entry to a number of HN or degree courses.
Preferred Entry Requirements Minimum of three Standard Grades (or equivalent) of which one must be in Art or Graphic Communication. You will also need to submit a portfolio of your artwork for consideration. If you have no formal qualification in this area a portfolio that illustrates your talent and ability will be favourably considered. Mature entry is encouraged and will be assessed on an individual basis.
