'' A Higher in a foreign language is a benchmark achievement. It is an indication that you have reached a stage in learning French which begins to allow you to use the language independently in confident and flexible ways.
The main aim of the course, therefore, is for the candidate to develop communicative competence to a level of some sophistication in defined, relevant and useful contexts. It will also provide an increasing bank of knowledge about France and French customs and ways of life.
Structure This NQ Higher course can be studied on a full-time basis as part of a group of Highers and on a part-time basis over one year.
Component units will be certificated by SQA separately. To gain the award of the course, the candidate must achieve all the component units of the course as well as the external assessment. The external assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the course award. The examination consists of 3 parts: Oral Assessment, Speaking, Reading, Directed Writing and Listening/Writing.
Content The course consists of a mandatory language unit and one additional unit chosen from Extended Reading/Viewing and Language in Work.
Career Opportunities Good language skills at this level should allow you to understand general written material in areas such as finance, banking, international business, travel and tourism, and to deal with customers and clients at a basic level.
Progression This course or its component units may provide progression to Advanced Higher French. It could also lead to a Higher National course or related university degree course.
Preferred Entry Requirements Candidates will normally be expected to have attained: - Intermediate 2 in French or its component units - Standard Grade French at Grade 1 or 2, including writing award at Grade 1 or 2 - An equivalent qualification.
