Course Description:

'' This is a one year full time course which has been developed for mature students who have practical skills and require a change in career. There are major opportunities in the job market for qualified gas engineers. This is an opportunity to be retrained to the highest standards at Lauder College. Lauder College have been providing gas training for the past 50 years to British Gas and other major gas companies and local authorities in Scotland. We are the premier providers of gas training and assessment in Scotland. Students will obtain workplace experience during the session with an employer. Lauder College will provide in-depth training in installing, commissioning, servicing and repairing domestic gas appliances. Students will gain excellent practical skills in our customised state-of-the-art gas workshops.

Structure
This is a one year full-time course. Students will also gain workplace experience with an employer during their training at the college and they will also be assessed in the college and workplace in both theory and practical.

Content
The following areas will be covered:
- Health & Safety
- Installation Pipework
- Installation of Domestic Gas Meters
- Combustion
- Flues and Ventilation
- Basic Electricity
- Installation, Commissioning, Servicing and Repairing: Cookers,
Tumble Dryers, Instantaneous and Storage Water Heaters,
Space Heaters, Built in Gas Appliances and Central Heating
Installations and Warm Air.

The course incorporates fault diagnostic skills, pipe manipulation, electrical installation and fault finding skills. It ensures students have the ability to work with a wide range of tools including power tools. Health & Safety is ongoing throughout the course and this will include electrical and gas safety.

Career Opportunities
Successful students may gain a supervisory role as a Quality Assurance Engineer, managing installation teams and sales. Some installers become self employed and run their own businesses. There are also career opportunities in training and assessment within this sector.

Progression
At a later date students may wish to extend their skills into commercial/industrial gas installations. Five years after completion of their training students will be required to undergo ACS training and assessment as part of their continuous development.
