Course Description:
'' The course enables students to develop specialist knowledge and understanding in relation to caring for others. It provides the opportunity to gain three Highers and the Scottish Group Award in Health or Social Care. The course has been designed to provide students with the skills for entry to related care fields.
Structure The course consists of three Highers: Higher Care; Higher Care Practice; and either Higher Human Biology or Higher Psychology. Students study a series of SQA units which are continually assessed throughout the course. Students also have the opportunity to sit three external Higher examinations with the Human Biology option leading to the Scottish Group Award in Health Care and the Psychology option leading to the Scottish Group Award in Social Care. The course can be undertaken over one year full-time or on a part-time basis over two years.
Content The following areas will be covered: - Human Development and Behaviour - Practical Skills for Carers - Health Promotion - Working as a Team in a Care Setting - Communication - HIV Infection Related Diseases & Hepatitis B - Promoting Equal Opportunities in a Care Context - Cell Function & Inheritance - The Continuation of Life.
A work placement as an assistant care staff member is included in the course (this will be dependent on Disclosure Scotland check).
Career Opportunities This course is designed to provide an access route to employment in Nursing and related disciplines although successful students can find employment in a wide variety of Care related jobs. Students will be able to pursue a career as Health Care Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physiotherapy Assistants or Podiatry Assistants.
Progression Students can progress to the HNC in Health Care or HNC Social Care. Completion of the course at Lauder College can also lead on to Diploma in Nursing courses at a number of universities such as Napier, Stirling and Dundee. Students will be required to undertake an interview to obtain their place at University.
