Course Description:

'' This course is aimed at providing new or basic level employees working within the retail industry with the knowledge and understanding to be able to perform their job effectively. Candidates are certificated to acknowledge their understanding and performance in the various areas of basic retail operations.

Structure
Candidates will undertake this qualification in their own workplace. The course is designed by the National Training Organisation for people working in a retail environment.

The prime source of evidence must be provided from the candidate¡¯s own workplace. The qualification is delivered as part of a continuous course that can be assessed throughout the year. Students will create a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that they have appropriate knowledge, skills and understanding and that they can carry out their job competently in the workplace. Day release training may be arranged as and when required.

The course duration is between 12 and 24 months depending on the candidate.

Content
Candidates are required to complete 3 mandatory and five optional units.

Mandatory units:
- Contribute to Maintaining a Safe and Healthy Workplace
- Contribute to Keeping the Workplace Secure
- Work Effectively in Own Organisation.

Optional units could include the following:
- Receive Goods and Materials into Storage
- Process Orders for Goods
- Display Stock to Promote Sales to Customers
- Help Customers to Choose Products
- Provide Information and Advice to Customers.

Career Opportunities
This work based qualification is designed to verify the abilities of front line staff who have the responsibility to serve customers in a retail environment or candidates wishing to pursue a career in this area.

Progression
Candidates wishing to develop their skills, particularly those aiming for managerial positions, may wish to progress to SVQ Level 3 in Retail Operations which forms part of the Modern Apprenticeship.

Preferred Entry Requirements
Candidates must be working in a retail environment, however there are no formal academic entry requirements.
