Course Description:

'' A critical and practical programme looking at the criteria that companies use to make investment decisions. These criteria include discounted cash flows (DCF), return on capital employed (ROCE), payback, profitability index (PI), and internal rate of return (IRR). Having looked at the basics of discounted cash flow techniques the material then incorporates relevant cost principles and the effects of taxation and inflation. The practical aspect of capital appraisal is achieved through spreadsheet package i.e. Microsoft Excel. Objectives include to: define and distinguish between capital and revenue expenditure; compare and contrast fixed assets investment and working capital investment; calculate DCF, ROCE, payback, PI, and IRR as measures of investment worth; explain the role of the time value of money and cost of capital in appraising investments; evaluate capital investments projects on real and nominal terms; calculate the effect of capital allowance and tax on project cash flows; evaluate the profitability of capital investment projects on a post-tax basis; and perform sensitivity analysis to capital investment evaluations.
