'' The aim of this course is to explore diversity in the workplace, focussing on the complexities of difference which can initiate team and individual change.

Learning objectives

Current anti-discrimination legislation and how it impacts on the workplace
The difference between equality, diversity and the appreciation of the business case for diversity
The elements which comprise an inclusive environment and who can make it happen
The need to recognise how others may perceive you and how you can reinforce or change these perceptions
How their own stereotype, biases and assumptions affect their behaviour and relationship with others.

Course content

Theory and rationale. What is diversity? Why should we explore it?
Equal opportunities and managing diversity
An overview of legal content in an equal opportunities framework
Focus on our ideals that may not be reality, considering assumptions, attitudes, stereotyping and past life experiences
Explore identity by considering why are we part of one group and not another
What helps and hinders inclusion and exclusion
We will consider individuals’ thoughts, feelings and actions, and how to break inappropriate behaviour
Look at how our past life influences our views and makes us who we are, exploring what we have in common with other team members
Consider the Cycle of change model and how we can effectively use this in our everyday lives
Look at tools and skills which initiate change such as active listening and open-closed question
Action plan on how we can engage with diversity.
